Harlem's brownstones — from Strivers' Row to Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill — were built with marble fireplaces, vestibules, and stair treads that have lasted more than a century. We restore them — since 1994.
Harlem Stone Care
Harlem has one of the largest and most architecturally significant concentrations of historic brownstones and townhouses in New York City. Many were built between the 1880s and the 1910s with genuine marble fireplaces, marble entry vestibules, stair treads, and bathroom floors — materials that have survived well over a century but often show their age.
Manhattan Stone Care has been restoring stone in Harlem since 1994. We work throughout Central Harlem, the St. Nicholas Historic District (Strivers' Row), Hamilton Heights, Sugar Hill, Mount Morris Park, and the Astor Row blocks — plus the co-ops and apartment buildings along Frederick Douglass Boulevard.
We perform marble repair (cracks, chips, scratches, etching, stains), marble restoration, and marble polishing of floors, walls, and countertops — plus grout cleaning and color sealing, and countertop protection.
Harlem brownstones present a particular challenge: the original marble is often irreplaceable, and the buildings are frequently within historic districts. Stone must be conserved rather than replaced. Many homes are also being renovated room by room, so we coordinate around construction schedules and protect adjacent surfaces carefully. Our approach is always to preserve what's original — that's where the value is.
